April 25, 2023
We have had three incidents where a bat was found at Snyder High School: March 20th, March 21st, and April 17th. Each incident was reported to Animal Control, who retrieved and tested the bats for rabies. No students were present when the bats were found on March 20th or 21st. We have been informed that the bat found outdoors on April 17th tested positive for rabies. The health department has contacted students’ parents who were near the bat.
Parents, please ask your children if they had contact with a bat at the High School and contact the school nurse or your healthcare provider if you believe your child touched this bat. Anyone exposed to this confirmed rabid bat and exposure to any bat at any time in the past also needs to seek medical consultation immediately.
Bats are not uncommon in West Texas and typically do not bother humans. However, bats can carry diseases, including rabies. Bats are among the most commonly reported rabid animals in the United States.
Please talk to your children about not approaching bats or any other wild animal.
If a bat is found, leave the area and immediately identify a staff member or an adult. They will contact animal control.
Do not touch bats, even if they are dead.
If you are concerned about a recent encounter with a bat, please contact your healthcare provider immediately.
Additional resources can be found on the CDC's website
We are actively working to find where bats may enter the building and will take necessary precautions and prevention measures. Although we have not found bats on other campuses, please be vigilant and report any concerns immediately.
Sincerely,
Bob Rauch
Superintendent of Schools
