Dress & Grooming

The district’s dress code is established to teach grooming and hygiene, prevent disruption, and minimize safety hazards.  The administration shall reserve the right to determine if forms of hairstyle and clothing distract or disrupt the learning process or environment enough to ask a student to make a change in hairstyle or clothing. 

Students and parents may determine a student’s personal dress and grooming standards, provided that they comply with the following:

General Requirements

Clothing should be clean, neat, fitted properly,  in good taste, worn in the correct manner, and styled for school wear. 

  • Modesty is key.

  • Clothing should be non-revealing and not be distracting to the learning environment.

  • All campuses prohibit clothing with pictures, emblems, or writings that promote inappropriate subjects, such as: 

    • anything lewd, offensive, vulgar, or obscene 

    • pictures or wording featuring tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, drugs, or any other substance prohibited under FNCF (LOCAL) 

    • any other subjects the principal or assistant principal deems inappropriate for school 

  • No underwear (or any portion thereof) shall be visible.

  • No blankets, trench coats, dusters, or robes. 

Shirts / Tops

  • No crop tops/midriffs (tops must be long enough to cover the midsection when standing or seated). 

  • No sheer/crocheted tops that reveal underclothing or sleeveless shirts.

  • Shirts, hoodies, or outerwear cannot have wording or images featuring sexual, drug, alcohol, or gang-related material.

  • Undergarments (bras/bralettes/etc.) and cleavage should not be visible.

  • No tank tops, spaghetti straps, or sleeveless tops.

Pants / Skirts / Dresses / Shorts

  • No skin may be visible above the fingertips.

  • Holes in pants must be below fingertip length while standing up straight. If holes are above fingertip length, opaque leggings must be worn underneath.  

  • No sagging.  Pants must be worn at the hips and secured with a belt if needed. 

  • Skirts and shorts must be fingertip length all the way around. 

  • Leggings must be worn with a covering garment (top/blouse/shirt). The covering garment MUST BE FINGERTIP LENGTH. 

Shoes / Accessories / Hair

  • Hair should be neat, clean, well-groomed, and styled so vision will not be obstructed.

  • Head coverings cannot be worn in the building (e.g., caps/beanies/hoods).

  • Sunglasses should not be worn in the building. 

  • Combs and picks are NOT allowed to be worn in the hair

  • Shoes must have a back (slides are NOT allowed), and heels must be no taller than 3 inches. Dress sandals with a back are permissible. 

  • Shoes must be worn at all times. 

  • Headbands are permissible except for – bandanas, doo rags, or headgear with gang-related marking/coloring.

Piercings, Tattoos, & Facial Hair

  • Visible tattoos must not be offensive or include wording or images featuring sexual, drug, alcohol, or gang-related material.

  • Ear piercings and nostril studs are permitted. All other visible facial/ear piercings are not allowed. This list includes but is not limited to –  lip rings/studs, nose rings, septum (bull ring), eyebrow, gauges, plugs, and tapers.

  • Students may not cut or shave designs in their hair or eyebrows. 

  • Facial hair is acceptable if neatly groomed/trimmed.

 -Principal/Assistant Principal has the final say

If the principal determines that a student’s grooming or clothing violates the school’s dress code, the student will be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school. If not corrected, the student may be assigned to in-school suspension for the remainder of the day, until the problem is corrected, or until a parent or designee brings an acceptable change of clothing to the school. Repeated offenses may result in more serious disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.  Repeated offenses by SJH students may result in the student being required to wear a standardized dress.
